This project was all about restoring the character of a traditional French property by combining authentic materials, traditional building techniques and carefully considered new structures. Our aim was to create a seamless connection between the existing buildings and the new additions, ensuring that every detail felt as though it had always belonged to the property.
From rebuilding the garden wall and creating bespoke entrance pillars to constructing a traditional timber carport, every element was designed to respect the history and character of the surroundings.
Where an old, deteriorated wall had been removed, we constructed a completely new garden wall, restoring both the structure and the appearance of the original boundary.
The work began with the installation of a solid concrete foundation to provide a stable base for the new construction. Concrete blocks were then used to build the main structure of the wall, creating a strong and durable foundation for the finishing work.
To achieve an authentic, traditional appearance, the new wall was clad in locally sourced natural stone. The natural variations in colour, texture and shape give the wall a timeless character and help it blend naturally into the surrounding garden and existing architecture.
The result is a robust, long-lasting garden wall that combines modern structural stability with the charm of traditional French stonework.
A key feature of the project was the construction of the pillars supporting both the pedestrian entrance gate and the main access gate.
Rather than using new stone, we reclaimed old cornerstones from a former building that once stood within the garden. These substantial pieces of historic masonry were reused to construct the pillars, giving them an authentic appearance and preserving a tangible connection with the property's past.
The old stones bring a sense of age, character and individuality that would be difficult to reproduce with new materials. Their weathered surfaces and distinctive details make each pillar unique.
Reusing these original building materials also allowed us to give new purpose to elements that might otherwise have been lost, while maintaining the traditional character of the property.
To complete the entrance, we designed and made bespoke lights for the pillars in our own workshop.
Working from the client's ideas, we created the lights using reclaimed old roof tiles. This unusual approach allowed us to incorporate another traditional building material into the design, creating lighting features that complement the reclaimed stone pillars and the surrounding architecture.
Each light was developed specifically for this project, rather than selected from a standard catalogue. The result is a distinctive finishing detail that combines practical lighting with craftsmanship, creativity and the reuse of traditional materials.
These bespoke features help bring the entire entrance together, creating a welcoming approach that feels consistent with the age and style of the property.
Against the existing outbuilding, we constructed a bespoke timber carport designed to look as though it had been built at the same time as the original house.
The project began with the installation of a concrete foundation slab. To maintain the traditional aesthetic, the edges of the slab were finished with natural stone, creating the appearance of an old stone base and helping the new structure sit comfortably within its surroundings.
The carport itself was built using reclaimed timber and traditional construction methods. The choice of old wood was essential to achieving the desired result: a structure with natural texture, visible character and the appearance of having stood alongside the original building for generations.
Rather than introducing a modern-looking extension, we focused on proportions, materials and detailing that complement the existing outbuilding and the wider property.
The finished carport provides practical shelter while becoming a natural extension of the traditional French country architecture.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful design and careful material selection can transform a property without losing its original identity.
By combining new structural foundations with locally sourced natural stone, reclaimed architectural elements and bespoke timber construction, we created features that are both functional and visually connected to the property's history.
The project brought together several of our specialist services:
At The Dutch Gardener, we believe that successful landscaping is about more than creating something new. It is about understanding the character of a place and finding ways to enhance it through thoughtful design, quality workmanship and respect for its surroundings.
The result is a property where new construction, reclaimed materials and traditional craftsmanship come together to create a coherent and timeless whole.
