Indian Runner Ducks

The Indian Runner Duck is a remarkable old domestic duck breed, originally from Southeast Asia. It is best known for its distinctive upright posture, long neck and elegant, almost penguin-like way of walking. Unlike most domestic ducks, Indian Runners stand almost vertically, giving them a unique and unmistakable appearance.

Active, curious and full of character

Indian Runner Ducks are lively, friendly and curious birds. They love exploring their surroundings, moving around in groups and searching for food. Their active nature makes them particularly interesting to watch in a garden or on a smallholding.

Natural helpers in the garden

One of the greatest advantages of keeping Indian Runner Ducks is their natural appetite for insects, slugs and snails. They spend much of their day foraging, helping to reduce the number of unwanted garden pests without the need for chemical treatments.

They are especially useful in areas where slugs and snails are a problem. Unlike chickens, ducks generally do much less scratching in the soil, making them a more suitable choice for certain gardens and planted areas. However, young plants and delicate vegetation should still be protected, as ducks may trample or nibble on them.

Excellent egg layers

Indian Runner Ducks are also well known for their impressive egg production. They can lay a considerable number of eggs throughout the year, making them a useful and attractive addition to a smallholding.
